Business Accomplishments
Do the accomplishments of others sometimes make you feel a bit inferior? If they do, you are not alone. Its a common human failing. One of the hardest lessons to learn in life is to stand up and cheer when the other fellow succeeds---and really mean it.Mark Twain once observed:"few things are harder to put up with than the annoyance of a good example.
Yet it doesn't pay to envy the accomplishments of others.Jealousy of someone else's luck or ability will get you nothing except perhaps a painful hole in the lining of your stomach--otherwise known as an ulcer.
A jealous nature is a serious handicap. People who can't stand the idea that someone else may be better, or better off, than they are have a tough row to hoe. World champions are few and far between. No matter how good you are at anything, there is always someone, somewhere, who is probably better.
There are enough opportunities in this world to go around---plenty to satisfy every individual willing to work for it. When other people do well, why sulk, belittle, or disparge? Be the first to congratulate them and share their pleasure, the try to figure out some of the things which helped them succeed and use them yourself.Real success for each one of us depends, not on tearing down other people, but on making the best of our own abilities. It comes from working to improve, not from worring about whether others are advancing faster, have bigger desks, more authority or get more pay.
Jealous feelings which cause people to disparge, belittle, or talk down other people get absolutely nowhere. They create enemies and consume time and energy which we would be much better off putting into our own jobs.People who give in to feelings of envy end up poisoning themselves. The best antidote for envy is confidence.People who do good work and know that their work is good, are much less apt to begrudge the success of others. They know sooner or later that their turn will come.
Each of us has a choice. We can let the success of others gnaw at our insides, or appreciate and share those successes and draw inspiration from them. Can there be any doubt which is the wiser? Make your choice and stick to it.You'll like yourself better for it. So will everyone else.
